The new Oracle of Apollo
A year and five days ago, I shuffled some things around to streamline the way I was doing some things around here. The more I dealt with integrated content management systems, the more I disliked updating this site. You see, I’m a luddite.
I’m actually a web developer by trade, but spending five minutes to install WordPress and other systems at work and for numerous friends did not translate to me setting something up that didn’t require me to hand-edit flat php includes with vim — and upload the 8 – 12 pieces that needed to be edited, whenever I finally got around to posting snippets for the last few months.
So, I’d go two months between updates, with little stupid stubs in iCal so I could remember what I did and what I wanted to say here. It was such a chore to go back through the weeks and write it all that, by the time I’d get around to it, it would take much more than just a weekend. Screw that.
More than two months ago, I moved this site to a host that provides MySQL databases with accounts and determined that I would bring my site into the twenty-first century — add RSS feeds and all that jazz — although I was inclined to add RSS stuff by, yes, editing flat php files.
Over the last few weeks, I decided that it was about time for me to make it much less of a pain in the ass to update my own website. Life is too short to feel bad about not getting it done (with apologies to David Allen), so here we are.
I have procrastinated long enough. Old features of the site may or may not be rolled into this new shiny thing. All of your permalinks, if any of you actually linked me, are now broken. Sorry.
I really look forward to experimenting with this system and wrangling it to include features of the former Oracle, including my movie list, cycling statistics, last fours, and all that jazz. But, for now, I think this is an improvement from the standpoint of editability. I’ll be adding all the old snippets, but with five complete years of entries, I expect this to take a little while.
Besides, if this sucks, I can always just upload all the old stuff again.
