Oh, Perfect
This morning, I got up, looking forward to flipping my cyclometer’s odometer over from 9999.9 to 0000.0 after work today. The forecast called for a high temperature in the mid-60s (18°C) and it would be a magnificent day to ride. Unfortunately, I got up really late, having forgotten to turn my alarm clock on last night, but the sun has been setting later and later lately. My plan for today was to do 32 miles.
Even at 06:15, when I headed downstairs, it wasn’t too cold outside. I grabbed my tall yellow pump, deciding that tires inflated to their maximum would make it easier for me to get a spectacular ride home after work and take a nice picture of my cyclometer at 9999.9. I got my Trek out of its stable, leaned it against the wall, and started on the tires.
In my attempt to put the pump nozzle, I broke the valve stem out of the front valve. I dug through my trunk bag, prepared to use my spare tube. Crap, there’s a hole in the spare from my attempting to spoon a 700×32 – 41 tube into a 700×32 tire. Ah, well, I have a patch kit for a reason. Wait. There are two holes in my spare tube? My patch kit only has one patch!
Okay, the tire is fine, it just has no valve stem core in it. This means every ounce of air that I put in it comes rushing out immediately. Maybe I can overinflate the tube 40% and get the valve cap on by the time the extra whistles out. In three attempts, I didn’t come close.
Looks like it’s the car to work today and the cyclometer flip tomorrow.
