Around Stevens Creek Reservoir
I have a habit of doing the same route with minimal variations every Saturday. Today, I wanted something different. I also wanted to take my digital camera along and get a couple of shots—hey, I bought a digital camera for a reason. Realizing that I really need more hilly climbing workouts, I selected a route that included a climb past Mountain Winery and around Stevens Creek Reservoir. My route took me past Google, though Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and Saratoga, and in the foothills behind the Reservoir, where all the fabulously weathy live. I completed my half-century ride with a quick sprint down Foothill Expressway home.
As I was suited up in my purple Yahoo! jersey and heading out the door, the postal delivery guy handed me a box from Nova Scotia. My new order of cycling gear has arrived from Ramsays, but right now I have to get on the road. Nothing like getting going on time.
Without a cloud in the sky, today was absolutely beautiful and only slightly breezy at first. In some places, the winds picked up a little (including a nice headwind in the final 20 miles), but the day stayed very, very nice. The climb through Saratoga and up to Mountain Winery was quite heart-pounding, but it didn’t require as much gristle as the last time I made the same trip (primarily because I was on the old hybrid at twice the weight of the Trek). The descents were amazing and fast, but a good portion of the route was on roads in serious need of repair. Trust me, nothing drives the adrenaline like taking a pothole on a corner at 35 miles an hour.
What a great ride. By the way, to the group of Google people in the car who yelled, “You should come work for us,” you guys rock. Your company is lucky to have you.
